Passage Canal Day Trips:

3-4 hour introductory paddle:
About 2.5 to 4 miles.
Offered daily starting at 8:00am - final evening departure at 7:00 pm
$75/person

Starting from either Whittier harbor or the head of Passage Canal, we will paddle beside the waterfalls along the north shore to a massive Kittiwake Rookery- a rock face with gushing waterfalls and thousands of nesting Kittiwakes.  Keep a lookout for land critters- sheep, marmots, river otters, and eagles. Once passed the Rookery we leave landside and cross Passage Canal where depths plunge to 600 feet, to the south shore. On the way across the canal, Billings beach and Billings Glacier are revealed to the northeast while Whittier Glacier and the far reaches of Shakespeare and Portage Glaciers are more easily seen to the west and southwest.  Once across we will explore the 2nd salmon run, possibly getting out for a brief jaunt, then paddle along the south shore again looking for land critters.  The 1st salmon run is nestled within a small cove that we will pass along with a glance at the town of Whittier as we return to our launch point.

5-6 hour intermediate paddle:
About 5 to 8 miles.
Offered daily starting at 8am - final evening departure at 4pm

$110/person

This trip is an extended version of the 3-4 hour trip and includes a mid-paddle lunch.  Instead of crossing from the north to the south shore just past the Kittiwake Rookery we will continue paddling along the north shore to Billings Beach and the ghost forest.  Here we can stretch our legs and have a snack or  lunch before crossing to the south shore.  After stopping for a while we will paddle across Passage Canal ending up farther east along the southern shoreline.  If we haven’t stopped for lunch yet, we will take out at one of many beaches along the way as well as walk within and explore the unique northernmost temperate rainforest.  From here we will follow the south shore back to our launch point.

8-11 hr. Passage Canal paddle:
Offered daily staring at 8 am

As the 5-6 hour trip is an extension of the shorter trip, this is an extension of the 5-6 hour trip.

This trip is geared more for those of you who have kayaking experience and wish to paddle your brains out.  We will explore both shores as far as possible.  The potential here is to paddle at least 20 miles if not more by the time we explore bays and coves: Poe Bay, Shotgun Cove, Squirrel Cove, and Logging Camp Cove.  We have the opportunity to see the mouth of Passage Canal, revealing the vastness of Prince William Sound.  Of course lunch and snacks are included, as we will certainly need them.

The trip ends up being about 15-25 miles.  This trip will start early and end late!

Hybrids-

Remember at Paddlers’ Realm, “Anything is Possible”.

Incorporating water taxis into our paddling day allows me to offer trips accessing parts of Passage Canal and Prince William Sound that would otherwise require hours if not days of paddling to reach.  Combine sight seeing from a water taxi, then get dropped off at a beach away from town, some paddling and lunch, then get picked up for the ride back to Whittier.  Prices will vary as a water taxi ride out and/or back may be required.  The key here is flexibility.

All Ladies Trips!

Reservations

While walk-in business is encouraged, reservations guarantee the opportunity for us to go paddling together.   Please e-mail or call ahead
when forming your plans.

Tandem kayaks are used on all day trips, unless there is appropriate experience to warrant single kayak use.  If your inexperienced and/or interested in paddling single kayaks consider a day of instruction or an instructional day trip.
